The hours of sleep, according to age, that children should respect.

One of the greatest concerns of parents is their children’s sleeping hours, since they influence their healthy development. A good rest is essential for our children’s childhood.

In general, sleep recommendations begin at 4 months of age, since it is practically impossible to establish sleep criteria before that time.

Therefore, we emphasize that the hours of sleep per day recommended by the American Sleep Association, including naps, are as follows.:

  • Children from 4 to 12 months: between 12 and 16 hours a day.
  • Children from 1 to 2 years old: between 11 and 14 hours.
  • 3 to 5 years old: approximately 10 to 13 hours per day.
  • 6 to 12 years old: from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
  • 13 to 18 years old: about 8 to 10 hours.

We emphasize that taking advantage of the hours for a good rest has benefits at all levels, from physical to cognitive and emotional.

On the other hand, poor sleep is associated with poor school performance, increased injuries, hypertension, obesity and depression.
