THE BENEFITS OF ANIMALS FOR CHILDREN

Although we may think otherwise, pets are very beneficial for children.

On the one hand, the coexistence of children and pets helps to develop their immune system. This is because it has been shown that an excessively clean environment is counterproductive when it comes to developing our natural defenses, so the presence of an animal helps in this aspect, as well as in preventing the development of allergies (a very common allergy is the one caused by animal hair). Children who live with dogs or cats from an early age are 50% less likely to develop allergies than those who do not have any pets at home.

In addition, the coexistence between a small child and a pet (the great favorites of small children being dogs and cats, but also rabbits) has many other advantages, for example:

Development of responsibility. By having to feed him, take him out, and generally care for him, a child with a pet may develop a sense of responsibility earlier.

Non-verbal communication. A very important aspect of the relationship with an animal is nonverbal communication, and it goes both ways. Therefore, for a child to see how his best friend cares for him when he is sad can help him, in turn, to notice which attitudes and behaviors reflect a state of mind on the part of the animal.

Emotional stability. Psychologists often advise getting a pet in times of depression, to be able to focus the mind on routine tasks and, more importantly, to have a goal, which is simple but satisfying to many people. The same can be applied to young children: the pet can go from being a mere animal to a companion that provides support and security.

It favors the cognitive, socioemotional and physical development of children, due to the range of different activities they can do with it, both physical (games) and brain-related: the feeling of having to protect it, of having to take care of it, of thinking about how to carry out these tasks is a stimulus for anyone’s mind, and of course for a child it is even more so. Likewise, pet-owning children suffer less stress and feel happier.

Hygiene. A perfect excuse to emphasize the importance of hygiene, since it is important that the child understands that, although few, there are certain risks and must understand them and know how to avoid them (wash hands before eating if he has played with the dog, do not let the dog urinate inside the house, etc).

Of course, it is very important to think carefully before taking an animal. We must take into account the time we have available, the money involved in maintaining them and also be sure that our children will collaborate in their care.
