Do you know the term ‘baby blues’?
Postpartum depression is not the same as the common ‘baby blues’. Here, we tell you all about it.
The difference between one and the other lies in the intensity and duration of the symptoms. It is true that the birth of a baby triggers a roller coaster of feelings and emotions in parents, especially if it is the first child. In the first place, feelings such as joy, illusion and happiness usually appear, but other less pleasant feelings such as anxiety and fear of the unknown can occur.
Some studies affirm that approximately 15% of women suffer symptoms of depression after childbirth and many others suffer from it, but do not externalize it, that is, they do not communicate it for fear of not being understood.
But what is the difference between depression and this new term?
The ”baby blues” is a normal reaction experienced by more than half of all women after giving birth. Symptoms appear immediately after delivery or a few days after delivery and usually last no more than two weeks, leaving no sequelae.
The most prominent symptoms are usually drastic mood swings, difficulty concentrating and problems falling asleep.
Although these symptoms are also very common in postpartum depression, in this case, they are of lesser intensity when the baby blues occur.
